One of the greatest movies of all time, Titanic, was released in 1997 and was created by 20th Century Fox and Paramount Pictures. Titanic is a romantic/epic American movie. It had held it record for highest grossing movie of all time – $1.8 billion worldwide, until Avatar had replaced it in 2010.
In this decade, the animated film industry started to grow. Pixar had released Toy Story, which was its first movie, in 1995 and then released Toy Story 2 in 1999. Pixar also released A Bug’s Life in 1998. Other than Pixar, Disney also had a lot of success. In the 1990s, the Disney Renaissance held pace (1989-1999). Walt Disney Studios made successful movies based off of classical stories. Several Disney movies were nominated for the Oscars, such as Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), The Lion King (1994), Pocahontas (1995), Hercules (1997), Mulan (1998), and Tarzan (1999). Both Aladdin and Lion King became the highest grossing movie of their year, but Lion King became the highest grossing animated movie of all time and it still holds the record.
Some of the popular TV shows in the 1990s were Fresh Prince of Bel Air (1990-1996), which was a very popular American sitcom. Another show is ER, which started in 1994. It was a medical drama television show, which ranked variously in the Top 5 TV shows for its first 8 season. Friends, which also started in 1994, was an American sitcom which ranked in the Top 10 TV shows in all its years of production. Lastly, SpongeBob SquarePants, which started in 1999, quickly became a great success with the young. It is Nickelodeon’s highest rated show and is still being produced – going into the 9th season.
